Do you know “What It Means To Be Green?” Students at Green Valley High School do.

Thanks to a partnership with Workforce Connections along with a State Energy Sector Partnership (SESP) grant from the Department of Labor, students are given a hands-on curriculum that will prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow. Learning takes place in a custom-designed Green Mobile Classroom where students experiment with micro-scale Eco-STEM houses, renewable energy systems and energy efficiency assessment tools. MGM Resorts employees are celebrating National Job Shadow Day Thursday.

More than 500 Clark County high school students will visit local MGM Resort properties to get a behind-the-scenes look at non-gaming job opportunities.

Organizers say students will be able to explore variety of attractions from the Mirage’s dolphin habitat to the roller coaster at New York-New York Casino Hotel.

All of the students participating in today’s event are high school seniors from the Graduate Advocate Initiative Program.

The organization is designed to increase the graduation rate in Southern Nevada.

Last month, when Evaleen Diaz found out she was pregnant, it became one more obstacle of many toward her goal of graduating in June with the rest of her Western High School class.

The 17-year-old senior is short on class credits and needs to pass three more proficiency exams before she can walk across the stage to receive her high school diploma. Now, Diaz is three months pregnant, complicating her plans to make up credits and cram for the state-mandated exit exams.

At a news conference on Jan. 31, Clark County School District Superintendent Dwight D. Jones, along with representatives from the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, Workforce Connections and United Way of Southern Nevada, called on the community to mentor at-risk high school seniors toward graduation through the Reclaim Your Future program.
